Google Unveils a Fresh Look for Android Brand

Google announced today the launch of a new and contemporary look for the Android brand, which is significant in the mobile operating system market.

The American tech giant stated in a blog post, “As the world’s largest open-source operating system, the Android platform serves a diverse community of developers, hardware makers, and users.”

Google added that with the platform’s growth and more than three billion Android devices worldwide, the brand’s visual appearance should reflect Android’s core values of openness, iteration, and inclusivity.

Over the past decade, the Android brand underwent several updates to improve its design and appearance in line with community needs, according to Google.

In 2019, the company changed the Android logo and also altered the naming of new releases, after using dessert names in alphabetical order since the system’s inception, the company switched to using numbers only starting with Android 10.

Google explained in its post that the new visual appearance of Android is inspired by its Material Design language, additionally, they no longer write the first letter of the system name in lowercase; it’s now “Android” instead of “android”, the logo has also been made more similar to Google’s own logo.

The company stated, “You’ll begin to see the new aspects of the brand identity, such as the updated logo and the three-dimensional Android head, appearing on Android devices and in more places starting this year.”

It’s worth noting that this new change in the Android logo is the fourth; it follows the first logo used from 2007 to 2014, then the second logo from 2014 to 2019, and the third logo from 2019 to the present.

Google acquired the Android operating system in August 2005. Android was founded in 2003, and at that time, the company brought in the former founders, led by engineer Andy Rubin, who continued to work on developing the system. He is directly responsible for Android’s current success.

According to market analytics company StatCounter, as of August of last year, the Android system holds a market share of 70.77% in the mobile operating system market, followed by Apple’s iOS with a 28.52% share.
