Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has warned Nigeria against underestimating Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The draw for the World Cup qualifiers in the CAF region left Nigeria drawn in Group C alongside Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Rufai, who was in the posts for the West African country during the US 94 World Cup where they were eliminated by Italy in the round of 16, is convinced that Rwanda can pose a threat when the pair face off during the qualifiers.
“If you ask me, this is a very tough group because facing teams like Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, Lesotho and Zimbabwe won’t be easy,” Rufai told Completesports
“The Super Eagles must not underestimate Rwanda, Zimbabwe or Lesotho if they really want to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Every team must be treated with great respect and they must approach each game like a cup final.”
Nigeria will be looking to return to the big stage after missing out on the Qatar 2022 World Cup after losing 1-0 on aggregate to Ghana.
The last couple of years has seen the country losing to minnows such as Central African Republic, Guinea Bissau and Rufai said that the team should change the attitude if they are to qualify for the world’s football showpiece which will take place in Mexico, United States and Canada.
The qualifiers are set to begin on November 13, 2023 and will run through November 18, 2025.
