Sunrise blew Kiyovu’s title hopes away by Mubiru the most underrated striker,The main duty of a centre-forward is to score goals and over the past three seasons, Sunrise FC import Yafesi Mubiru has proven to be prolific and managed to meet his employers’ expectations.
Mubiru may not be playing for a big team but he has for the past three seasons shown in his three seasons that he is a goal predator. His numbers speak for him and prove his consistency in finding the back of the net.
Cast in the mood of former Manchester United and Argentine forward Carlos Tevez, Mubiru is not a giant striker but he compensates for that with agility, speed, goal instinct and great technical abilities.
Born in Uganda in October, 1997, Mubiru started his footballing career with Onduparaka FC in his home country before moving to Tooro FC in 2019. After just one season, he was scouted by coach Moses Basena who was handling Sunrise and he signed him in 2020.
In his first season with the Nyagatare-based club, he bagged 10 league goals but the team could not survive the Premier League as they were relegated. In the second division, Mubiru won the league top scorer with 17 goals as he inspired Sunrise back to the first tier league.
The striker has scored 14 league goals for Sunrise so far this season and he is at par in the top scoring charts with AS Kigali’s Shaban Hussein and Rayon Sports’ Léandre Onana.
He netted the match winner as Sunrise blew Kiyovu’s title hopes away as they beat them 1-0 on Sunday at Nyagatare Stadium.
In all, he has netted 42 goals in three seasons and he could even add up to the tally before this campaign ends.
Sadly, enough, Mubiru is not getting the accolades and attention he deserves despite his consistency and impressive form over the past three seasons. He is often overlooked even when top players in the league are being mentioned.
“My numbers speak for me, I have 42 goals under my belt in three seasons. I have scored 14 goals this seaosn but I am not duly recognized and do not get the needed coverage from the media despite all my effort,” claimed Mubiru in an interview with Times Sport.
“I will continue to work hard for my team and for myself. I am still scoring goals and I will keep performing well. Sometimes not getting enough media coverage if you are even playing well is a source of worry.”
With just one game to end of the league season, Mubiru is also eyeing the top scorer prize as he believes he can overtake rivals Hussein and Onana and beat them to the gong.
“I believe I can win the top scorer award and I am capable of it. Our last game against Rayon is very crucial. I hope to score to help my team will win,” he said.
Mubiru has one year left on his current contract at Sunrise and looking at his great output, a bigger team could swoop for him in the June 2023 transfer.
“The dream of every player is to continue to progress. If any big club comes and my team is happy with the offer, we shall see. For now, I am a Sunrise FC player,” he added.
