The University of Rwanda has welcomed 200 medical students to their war-torn country, Sudan, to continue their studies in Rwanda, until the end of the war.

They are students at the University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST), which is based in Khartoum City’s Riyad District and offers programs in general medicine and dentistry.

133 of these students are from the Sudan, while others come from Nigeria, Jordan, Ireland, France, and other nations.

According to Dr. Didas Kayihura Muganga, Vice Chancellor of UR, “It is the students of UMST who decided that they are the most urgent because others may be taken to other countries with which they have relations.”

“It is desirable in Rwanda […] as students of dentistry find that our department and the equipment it utilizes are at an important level, they find that they come and do tests because the department has enough equipment,” he added.

Speaking at the reception, VC Dr Didas Kayihura noted that the presence of students from the University of Medical Sciences & Technology UMST  is a sign of trust in the country but also the trust in UR infrastructure and its quality Education.

According to the University of Rwanda administration, these students will come with their expert teachers, who will oversee them and provide assistance in Rwandan hospitals.

Since April 2023, war is currently raging in Sudan, where the army of this country led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is fighting against the armed group (Rapid Support Forces: RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, his former deputy.
