US Secretary Blinken Call with President Kagame about DRCongo Crisis

US Secretary Blinken Call with President Kagame about DRCongo Crisis, on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Rwandan President Paul Kagame to discuss the importance of peace and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

It is a discussion that the office of the President of the United States of America declared to have been productive, where the two leaders exchanged views on the insecurity that continues to be a problem on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC).

Blinken informed President Kagame the results of the visit of the US Deputy Secretary, Victoria Jane Nuland, to Kinshasa.

On August 3, Victoria Jane Nuland met the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, during his tour of African countries, which started from July 29 to August 4, 2023.

Victoria Nuland also discussed with various officials in the Government of the DRC about the fact that the USA supports the elections to be fair and transparent, they return to the insecurity in the East of the DRC, relief operations, the development of the economy of the country, capacity building of institutions and good governance.

Apart from DRC, Ms. Nuland also visited South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Niger.

On the phone, Secretary Blinken expressed strong support for regional mediation and dialogue led by Angola and the East African Community.

He underscored the need for concrete progress on and implementation of commitments made during these discussions, including the November 23 Luanda Mini-Summit on Peace and Security communiqué.

Secretary Blinken also shared deep concern about the impact of the fighting on Congolese civilians who have been killed, injured and displaced from their homes. Secretary Blinken condemned the resurgence of hate speech and public incitement against Rwandaphone communities, recalling the real and horrible consequences of such rhetoric in the past.
