WHAT ARE SOME CULTURE TABOOS IN RWANDA

If a Rwandan lends something to a friend and s/he loses it, it is considered a taboo to ask the friend to replace it or pay for it. Rwandans just forget about the lost thing and move on. If a bird poops on your head, it means you will get rich. If you see a cat in the morning, your day will be bad
Below are a few that might help a bit.
1. When greeting, use your right hand. It’s a bit disrespectful to greet somebody with your left hand.
2. If your voice is loud, learn to tone it down. Rwandans like their piece of calm. Speaking loudly might be considered too aggressive depending on the situation.
3. If you are not happy with a service or something, try to complain politely
Speaking in loud voices is considered rude and you will be helped if you calm down with discipline. Self-respect and discipline is a big part of the Rwandan culture. It makes a big difference to voice your frustrations with order and discipline.
Negatively criticizing others in the public. Internal political affairs come to mind. Rwandans tend to be very patriotic and kinda nationalistic. If you are a foreigner,
4. Negatively criticizing their government does not sit well with them. They are very protective of their current state affairs, especially President PAUL KAGAME They call him the people’s president, his Excellency, and other titles. In general, Rwandans despise negative comments about their politics, especially when it comes from non-Rwandans.
5. Abide by the anti-tribalism laws and follow the unity highway to peace and prosperity. It is against the law to call anybody by their ethnic groups. At this point, it is actually very offensive to many. Please, don’t do it. We are all Rwandans today.
Take some of the above with a grain of salt. We cannot generalize the opinions of 13 million people with different backgrounds and socio-economic status.
In general, Rwandans tend to give a pass to guests and visitors on somethings. However, #4 and #5 are NOT negotiable. You should know them before coming to Rwanda
