Saka struck two minutes after Martin Odegaard classily curled in from distance as part of a chaotic finish at Emirates Stadium, where Leandro Trossard also hit the crossbar as Arsenal pushed for a win that had seemed unlikely when they twice fell two goals behind.
Arsenal will start their match at City on Wednesday in a precarious position at the top, five points above the reigning champions with two games fewer to play than Pep Guardiola’s side.
While the Gunners may sense they now need to win at City, Southampton are three points away from escaping the bottom three and have played a game more than their nearest rivals.
